K20165 - Ajiro-ami omiyage kokeshi 網代編み
This distinctive omiyage kokeshi is crafted from a beautiful combination of turned wood and finely woven natural material. Its rounded wooden head is hand-painted with a gentle, stylised expression, delicate red accents and small ribbon-like details in the hair, giving the doll a warm and nostalgic personality.
The cylindrical body is decorated with ajiro-ami (網代編み), a traditional Japanese diagonal plaiting technique commonly associated with bamboo, reeds and other flexible plant fibres. The interlaced strands create a rhythmic geometric surface, while the red woven pattern adds a bold decorative contrast. Above the body, a carved wooden collar echoes the diagonal movement of the weaving and creates a harmonious transition between the different materials.
Unlike conventional kokeshi made entirely from wood, this mixed-material souvenir doll reflects the creativity of regional post-war Japanese craft production. Local artisans often combined familiar kokeshi forms with basketry, straw work and other traditional techniques to produce memorable souvenirs representing the character of their region.
