K25063 - Yajirō kokeshi by Ishikawa Tokujiro 石川篤次郎
This Yajirō kokeshi by Ishikawa Tokujiro (石川篤次郎, 1915–2005) beautifully embodies the hallmarks of one of the oldest and most vibrant kokeshi traditions from Miyagi Prefecture. Carved with a refined sense of balance and decorated in warm shades of crimson, the doll displays classic Yajirō characteristics—simple, fluid lines and a vivid yet earthy palette that evokes both warmth and familiarity.
The figure’s slender, gently contoured body is adorned with stylized ribbon motifs and concentric rings around the shoulders, evoking the festive energy typical of the Yajirō school. The head is rounded and expressive, with a delicate facial expression defined by fine brushwork, soft side locks, and subtle floral accents atop the crown—giving her a look that is both dignified and cheerful.
Born the second son of Ishikawa Kamejiro, Tokujiro came from a family deeply rooted in the craft of kokeshi-making. He trained under his elder brother, Ishikawa Heiji, and carried forward the family tradition with both fidelity and innovation. Tokujiro began making kokeshi before the war and remained active well into the late 20th century. Throughout his long career, he was known for his remarkable precision and traditionalist approach, while still infusing each piece with a quiet personal character.
His work was frequently exhibited and appreciated across Japan, earning admiration not only for its technical excellence but also for its emotional depth. Despite the changes in time and taste, Tokujiro remained committed to his craft, producing dolls marked by their clarity of form, purity of design, and serene presence—qualities that this particular kokeshi encapsulates with grace.
