This Yamagata kokeshi is the work of Eiji Aida (会田栄治, 1925–2015), a master craftsman whose creations are celebrated for their gentle harmony and refined traditionalism. The doll features a cylindrical body painted with rounded red floral motifs—stylized plum blossoms—paired with subtle green leaf accents. The face, framed by thick black side-parted hair and red hair ribbons, is painted with calm, elongated eyes and soft pink cheeks, imparting a composed and serene expression characteristic of the Yamagata style.

Born in Yamagata City, Eiji Aida was the son of Aida Kikuji, a respected figure in the world of kokeshi. Following in his father's footsteps, Eiji began making kokeshi around 1948, immersing himself in the classical techniques of woodturning and brush decoration. His approach honored the integrity of the Yamagata kokeshi tradition, known for its graceful proportions, restrained ornamentation, and floral patterns.

What set Aida apart was the precision and subtlety of his brushwork—he maintained the essence of the Yamagata aesthetic while introducing delicate refinements in facial expressions and flower design, creating dolls that feel both timeless and personal. His commitment to the craft earned him respect across regional and national folk art exhibitions, and his works became symbols of quiet mastery.

This piece is a wonderful example of Aida’s craftsmanship—balanced, understated, and rich in heritage, it reflects not only his skill but also his role in preserving and evolving the Yamagata kokeshi lineage for future generations.
