This is a traditional Naruko-style kokeshi doll crafted by Yasuo Okazaki (岡崎靖男), born in 1954, a respected kokeshi maker from Naruko Onsen in Miyagi Prefecture. Standing at 24cm, this piece beautifully embodies the elegance and warmth typical of the Naruko lineage, known for its clean lathe work, rounded shoulders, and floral motifs.
The doll features a round head with a classic Naruko hairstyle, delicately hand-painted with fine brushstrokes that give the face a gentle and friendly expression. Surrounding the crown and cheeks are vivid red floral motifs, echoing the chrysanthemum designs that are a hallmark of the region. The body is decorated with bold, symmetrical red flowers and stylized leaves, painted with confident, flowing lines that showcase Okazaki’s skilled craftsmanship and control over color and balance.
Yasuo Okazaki is part of a multi-generational lineage of kokeshi makers and has continued the family tradition with fidelity to classic form. Following in the style of Hitoshi Okazaki, he produces standard Naruko-style kokeshi dolls. In addition to making kokeshi in the workshop in front of the Okaji store in Shinyashiki, he also makes them in the demonstration room at the Japan Kokeshi Museum.
