K25111 - Shingata Kokeshi with Sakura Motif by Seizan 靜山
This vintage kokeshi doll is a fine example of shingata kokeshi (新型こけし), blending traditional doll-making with a modern aesthetic. Handcrafted by the artisan 靜山 (Seizan) in Sendai, a city rich in cultural heritage, the doll features a serene, minimalistic facial expression and a tall cylindrical body.
The front is beautifully adorned with a delicate hand-painted sakura (cherry blossom) motif, symbolizing fleeting beauty and the arrival of spring. Blossoms in soft pink and white gently cascade across the body, accompanied by flowing calligraphy that adds a poetic and emotional layer to the artwork. The red and white kimono design painted below suggests celebration and tradition.
This design is common with many sosaku or shingata kokeshi artists: they known in local artisan communities and folk craft shops in Sendai, kokeshi like this are often given as gifts (omiyage) to convey heartfelt sentiments, and this one especially captures the gentle charm and poetic soul of Tōhoku region craft.
