K25115 - Togatta Kokeshi by Tomio Sato 佐藤富雄

This is a beautiful Togatta-style Kokeshi doll by Tomio Sato (佐藤富雄, 1928–2016), a respected artisan from Togatta-Shinchi in Miyagi Prefecture. Measuring 24cm, the doll showcases the classic elegance of the Togatta tradition, one of the oldest kokeshi lineages in Japan.

Tomio Sato was the eldest son of master craftsman Bunsuke Sato, and began woodworking at a young age, initially crafting utilitarian objects like spools and tops. His first kokeshi creation was a miniature netsuke doll, specially ordered by a well-known collector. After WWII, he resumed kokeshi-making full-time alongside his family in Togatta Onsen.

This piece reflects the Bunsuke lineage—graceful proportions, crisp floral motifs painted in red, and a gentle, expressive face. The subtle headband motif and triple-flower body pattern are hallmarks of the tradition he preserved.

Tomio continued the family’s artistry even after his father’s passing in 1977, later mentoring future artisans like Kesakichi Sato. Though he faced challenges such as a decline in pigment quality and a late-life eye injury, Tomio remained dedicated to his craft until retiring around 2008. He passed away in 2016, leaving behind a quiet but enduring legacy in the kokeshi world.

Size: 7 x 7 x 24cm
