This charming Tsuchiyu-style kokeshi is the work of Tokunaga Shinichi (徳永慎一, 1933– ), a respected artisan from Fukushima Prefecture known for his refined execution of traditional forms and experimental wooden crafts.

Shinichi Tokunaga trained under Kenichi Nishiyama, inheriting the signature traits of the Tsuchiyu lineage—elegant conical body shapes, cheerful facial expressions, and bold, colorful patterns. This particular doll showcases all those qualities beautifully: the face is delicately hand-painted with a sweet, slightly mischievous smile framed by classic red ribbon motifs and thick side hair. The body features vivid horizontal bands of red, green, and purple, rhythmically spaced over the tapered form—a hallmark of Tsuchiyu kokeshi aesthetics.

Aside from classic kokeshi, Tokunaga is also known for his craftwork using sophora (Japanese laurel) wood, making pieces like kokeshi-shaped containers and toys. Though not as widely produced today, his works have become sought-after by collectors, frequently appearing on secondhand markets labeled as rare or uncommon.

This doll is a delightful example of postwar Tsuchiyu craftsmanship—bright, joyful, and full of character—embodying the spirit of handmade folk art from Fukushima.
