K25134 - Yajiro Kokeshi by Masao Saito 斎藤正夫
A Yajirō-style kokeshi handcrafted by Masao Saito (斎藤正夫, 1932–), a traditional craftsman from Shiroishi City, Miyagi Prefecture. Masao Saito began his journey in woodcraft at the age of 18 in 1949, later apprenticing under Tsugio Sato, a master kokeshi maker, whose influence can be clearly seen in Saito’s careful craftsmanship and distinctive painting style.
This piece features the classic hallmarks of the Yajirō lineage—most notably, the tall, slender form with a distinct separation between the torso and base, along with vibrant bands of red, yellow, and purple encircling the body and head. The doll is adorned with floral motifs, hand-painted in bold red and black, bringing life to the natural wood grain. Her serene face, with delicately arched eyebrows and a soft smile, evokes the gentle charm typical of the style.
Masao Saito's kokeshi often reflect his respect for tradition and his master's influence, with clean, confident brushwork and balanced proportions. As Yajirō-style kokeshi continue to grow in appreciation among collectors, this particular piece is a beautiful example of postwar craftsmanship rooted in the regional folk art of Tōhoku.
