This Naruko kokeshi by Yoshikazu Takahashi 高橋義一 (1951– ) beautifully reflects the vitality of the Takakan lineage and the colorful elegance associated with modern Naruko craftsmanship.

The doll features a large, rounded head with a bright, cheerful expression. The arched brows, gently closed eyes, and small red mouth give a warm, almost playful character. Bold black side locks frame the face, while red chrysanthemum-like brushwork crowns the head—an unmistakable Naruko hallmark. The body is gracefully shaped with a slightly flared base and decorated with dynamic red floral motifs layered in full bloom, complemented by soft green leaves. Fine red ring lines at the neck and base accentuate the form, and the natural wood grain subtly shows through, adding warmth and depth.

Born on September 7, 1951, in Shinyashiki, Naruko, Yoshikazu Takahashi is the eldest son of Takahashi Matsuko (registered as Matsuo). After his family returned from Akita to Naruko in 1950, he was born the following year. At age seventeen, in 1967, he began training in woodcarving under his uncle Takahashi Morio. He first worked as a Takakan craftsman, turning base wood for kokeshi, and around 1982 began producing his own signed works. Establishing his workshop in Tamanoki across the river from Kawado Station, he continued the Takakan tradition, creating both Kanji-style and Asa-style dolls.

This piece exemplifies his balanced proportions, vivid coloration, and joyful expression—an expressive and confident work from a craftsman who continues to carry forward the Naruko tradition.
