K30063 - Hijiori Kokeshi by Kōji Okuyama 奥山庫治
This delightful Hijiori Kokeshi was handcrafted by Kōji Okuyama (奥山庫治, 1934–2008), one of the most respected artisans of the Hijiori (Hijiori) tradition from Hijiori Onsen, Yamagata Prefecture. Born into a family of woodworkers, Kōji learned woodworking from his father, Kiyoji Okuyama, before life led him to work in the mining industry. After returning to his hometown in the early 1960s, he devoted himself to kokeshi making, first as a side occupation and, from around 1970, as a full-time craftsman. Following his father's passing in 1972, he continued the family tradition while training the next generation of artisans. Although declining health reduced his production in later years, his warm and distinctive works remain highly appreciated by collectors today.
What makes this piece especially delightful is its hidden rattle mechanism. The hollow interior contains small objects that produce a gentle sound when the doll is shaken, giving it the character of a traditional naruko (rattle) kokeshi. This playful feature adds an interactive element rarely found in standard kokeshi dolls, combining folk craftsmanship with the simple joy of sound.
This charming doll is a wonderful example of the Hijiori style, featuring a generously proportioned head, a gently smiling expression, and a cylindrical body decorated with bold crimson chrysanthemum-like motifs. The soft facial features, elegant black hair, and carefully balanced proportions reflect the quiet warmth and refined simplicity for which Hijiori kokeshi are admired.
The natural grain of the wood, subtle patina, and hand-painted brushwork speak to the authenticity of the piece and the artisan's years of experience. The vibrant red floral decoration is beautifully complemented by the finely painted face, creating a harmonious balance between elegance and folk-art charm.
