This Shingata Kokeshi was created by Tadashi Iwasaki 岩崎忠, a respected Shōwa-period kokeshi craftsman known for working across both traditional and more freely interpreted modern forms.

The most striking feature is the bold floral decoration covering the body. Large blossoms in warm shades of russet, orange and muted red are balanced by sweeping leaves and stems, creating a strong graphic contrast against the natural wood.

Iwasaki was known for his versatility. While his work was rooted in the traditions of Yamagata kokeshi, he also embraced the freer language of Shingata and creative kokeshi, experimenting with proportion, decorative motifs and more expressive surface painting.

Tadashi Iwasaki active primarily during the Shōwa period, Tadashi Iwasaki received recognition for his craftsmanship at national kokeshi exhibitions, including the Fukushima Chamber of Commerce and Industry President’s Award at the All Japan Kokeshi Contest.

Among his better-known works is “Haru wo Matsu Kodomo” (春を待つ子供, Children Waiting for Spring), and he also produced themed works inspired by Japanese landscapes, travel and literary culture, including figures connected with Matsuo Bashō and Matsushima.
