K45002 - Sōsaku Kokeshi by Kishi Sadao 岸貞男
This Sōsaku Kokeshi titled 「精魂の小麦」“Seishin Komugi no” (Spirit of Wheat) by Kishi Sadao is a serene celebration of nature’s quiet strength and resilience. Standing an impressive 48cm tall, the doll’s elegant, elongated form and soft natural tones reflect the artist’s mastery of proportion and simplicity.
The piece is crafted from light wood, with delicate hand-painted motifs of ripened wheat stalks that gently wrap around the smooth body. The restrained design highlights Kishi’s signature style — emphasizing the beauty of natural wood grain and the tranquil spirit of his chosen motifs. The doll’s minimalist expression, with fine, closed eyes and a calm demeanor, evokes a meditative stillness that embodies the spirit of the earth and harvest.
Kishi Sadao 岸貞男 (1932–1998) was born in Maebashi, Gunma Prefecture, in 1932, and was one of Japan’s most respected creative kokeshi artists. Over his lifetime, he produced hundreds of sōsaku kokeshi that combined modern form with deep traditional symbolism. His works often drew inspiration from nature — particularly wheat, a recurring theme linked to the Wheat Festival of Korobe Gorge, which profoundly influenced his artistic vision.
Throughout his career, Kishi received numerous accolades, including the Prime Minister’s Award and the Minister of Economy, Trade, and Industry Award (METI), honors that recognized his innovation and craftsmanship. His kokeshi, characterized by clean lines, organic motifs, and harmonious form, celebrate the connection between human life and nature’s enduring rhythms.
“Spirit of Wheat” captures that philosophy beautifully, a poetic embodiment of growth, patience, and quiet vitality, rendered through Kishi’s delicate balance of material and meaning.
