This shikishi print features a depiction of Shinran Shonin (親鸞聖人, 1173–1263), the founder of the Jōdo Shinshū (True Pure Land School) of Buddhism. The artwork represents the 「鏡の御影」 (Kagami no Miei, “Portrait in the Mirror”), a traditional iconographic image that has been revered in Shin Buddhism for centuries.

The portrait captures Shinran in his monk’s robes, holding a nenju (prayer beads), embodying both serenity and spiritual authority. Flanking the figure are calligraphic inscriptions in classical style, further enhancing its devotional and cultural significance.

The 「鏡の御影」 image is one of the most venerated portraits of Shinran Shonin, believed to have been created posthumously as a devotional representation for followers. It serves as a reminder of his teachings on Amida Buddha’s vow of salvation and the path of faith through nembutsu.

A striking piece that blends portraiture, calligraphy, and sacred imagery, this shikishi card would be a meaningful addition to a collection of Japanese Buddhist art, or as a display piece symbolizing spiritual reflection and gratitude.
