This shikishi print presents an auspicious and playful scene combining calligraphy and ink painting, a style often favored for celebratory or talismanic works.

Ueno Tōen (上野澄園) was a Japanese calligrapher and painter known for works that blend traditional ink painting (墨画) with auspicious themes and classical calligraphy. Many of his designs were reproduced as printed shikishi, making his work widely appreciated as decorative pieces for the home, gifts for celebrations, and talismans for New Year, birthdays, or longevity milestones.

At the center, the bold calligraphy reads 「一福延寿」 (Ichi-fuku enju), meaning “One blessing extends longevity”—a phrase associated with good fortune, long life, and the accumulation of blessings. The characters are written with confident, rhythmic brushwork, giving the composition a strong spiritual presence.

Below the calligraphy, a lively karako (唐子)—a traditional Chinese-style child figure popular in Japanese art—is shown tugging on a rope attached to a horse. The exaggerated contrast between the small child and the powerful animal creates a humorous yet symbolic image. Rather than literal strength, the scene suggests auspicious effort, innocence, and the idea that sincerity and perseverance can move even great forces. Such imagery is often linked to wishes for healthy growth, success, and vitality, especially for children.

This shikishi combines humor, symbolism, and traditional calligraphy, making it a charming and meaningful piece that embodies wishes for longevity, happiness, and enduring good fortune.
