This original shikishi calligraphy centers on the powerful phrase 和心 (washin), meaning “a harmonious heart” or “peaceful mind.” Rendered in bold, expressive brushstrokes, the two characters feel both grounded and fluid, embodying the balance and inner calm that the phrase itself conveys.

The calligraphy is intentionally asymmetrical, with confident, weighty strokes balanced by lighter, lifting movements of the brush. This dynamic rhythm reflects a Zen understanding of harmony—not something fixed or perfectly even, but a living balance that arises naturally through mindfulness and sincerity.

This piece comes from 錦織寺 (Nishikiori-dera), a Buddhist temple in Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture, adding devotional and institutional context to the work. Shikishi like this were often created by temple priests as expressions of teaching, reflection, or blessing, rather than purely decorative art.

Along the left side appears a vertical inscription followed by the artist’s signature 宣慈 (Senji), accompanied by traditional red seals. These seals lend spiritual authority and anchor the work within classical Buddhist calligraphic tradition.
