This vintage shikishi artwork from 昭和甲寅, the Showa “kinoe-tora” Year of the Tiger, corresponding to 1974 — is a charming and expressive piece painted in a pure, sincere, childlike style.

The work depicts a playful tiger rendered with simple, free brushstrokes. Rather than presenting the tiger as fierce or intimidating, the artist gives it a gentle and humorous character, with rounded features, soft ink washes, and an almost innocent expression. This “childheart” style brings warmth and sincerity to the image, making the tiger feel approachable, lively, and full of personality.

In Japanese symbolism, the tiger is often associated with courage, protection, vitality, and strength. Here, those qualities are expressed not through power, but through simplicity and innocence.

The handwritten inscription on the left includes the date 昭和甲寅, placing the work in the Tiger year of the Showa period. Its minimal ink painting, gentle humor, and handmade feeling make it a lovely piece for collectors of Japanese shikishi art, zodiac tiger motifs, Zen-inspired brushwork, or folk-style Japanese paintings.
