An original Japanese shikishi artwork depicting a stylized Nambu golden ox, signed Kobayashi 小林.
The design of Akabeko cow related to Japanese beko folk crafts. Akabeko, the famous red cow toy of the Aizu region, is known for its rounded body, simplified features, and auspicious associations.
The inscription on the reverse reads: “Nambu – Golden Ox”
The “golden ox” theme adds an additional association with wealth and good fortune, while the folk-toy styling connects the image with the broader tradition of kyōdo gangu (郷土玩具 / regional folk toys).
The artist reduces the animal to a few bold shapes and decorative accents, creating a composition that feels both traditional and modern. The generous empty space around the figure emphasizes its toy-like silhouette and gives the piece a wonderfully quiet, graphic quality.
