TB118 - Hasami-yaki Vase by Tatei Jiho 立井治甫

TB118 - Hasami-yaki Vase by Tatei Jiho 立井治甫

This vase 練り込み(一輪生), crafted by 立井治甫 of 治甫窯, is an elegant example of the nerikomi technique, in which layered and colored clays are combined and shaped directly on the potter’s wheel. The result is a seamless swirl of deep indigo, stone gray, and natural clay tones that spiral around the vase’s softly tapered cylindrical form. The matte surface and gentle gradations of color are entirely inherent to the clay itself, nothing is painted, showcasing the technical mastery required for true nerikomi work.

治甫窯 (Jihogama), the studio of ceramic artist 立井治甫 (Tatei Jiho), is connected to the tradition of 波佐見焼 (Hasami-yaki), a pottery style rooted in Nagasaki Prefecture with a history stretching back over four centuries. Hasami-yaki is known for its balance of practicality and artistry: clean forms, refined craftsmanship, and a willingness to embrace both tradition and innovation. Many contemporary Hasami potters explore modern techniques and aesthetics while maintaining the quiet elegance that characterizes the region’s work.

立井治甫 is an artisan whose work displays a refined understanding of both Hasami tradition and contemporary ceramic expression. His pieces, presented in wooden boxes with calligraphy, reflect the Japanese belief that even everyday functional vessels can be objects of quiet beauty. The vase’s form, a simple single-stem shape shows this philosophy clearly: minimal, balanced, and made to highlight the natural elegance of a single flower.
