TB135 - Kiyomizu-yaki Large Bowl – Mishima-te 清水焼
Vintage item, never used. This Kiyomizu-yaki (清水焼) large bowl is crafted in the classic Mishima-te (三島手) style—an aesthetic known for its rhythmic stamped patterns, white slip inlay, and refined Korean-inspired motifs. Traditionally used as a kashibachi (菓子鉢) for serving sweets in tea gatherings, this piece also functions beautifully as a display bowl or centerpiece.
The interior showcases a harmonious sequence of incised and stamped floral motifs, each filled with creamy white slip that contrasts against the soft brown glaze beneath. This creates the signature Mishima effect, delicate, lace-like decoration that is both rustic and sophisticated. The bowl’s wide, gently flared shape enhances the visibility of the intricate inner patterns while giving the piece an inviting presence.
The accompanying paperwork explains the handmade nature of Kiyomizu ware: each piece is shaped, decorated, and fired individually, resulting in natural variations of tone and pattern. These subtle differences are celebrated as the hallmark of true craftsmanship and the refined imperfection (wabi-sabi) cherished in Kyoto ceramics.
