TB218 - Yunomi Tea Cup of Karatsu-yaki 唐津焼
This yunomi tea cup is a fine example of Karatsu-yaki 唐津焼 in the classic 斑唐津 (Madara Karatsu) style, celebrated for its natural simplicity and rustic elegance.
Madara Karatsu is characterized by its softly speckled surface, created by layering a translucent, milky glaze over an iron-rich clay body. In this piece, the warm beige glaze reveals delicate brown flecks and subtle tonal variations, giving the surface a quiet depth and organic texture. The glaze pools subtly near the base and rim, where earthy tones emerge, highlighting the natural kiln effects that are central to Karatsu ware.
The front of the cup is inscribed with the calligraphy 「忘筌」 (Bōsen / Wasen). The phrase originates from classical Chinese philosophy and can be interpreted as “forgetting the trap once the fish is caught” — a metaphor suggesting that once the essence is understood, the form can be transcended. This poetic inscription adds a contemplative dimension to the piece, making it especially fitting for quiet tea moments and reflection.
The form is gently cylindrical with a slightly thickened rim, offering a comfortable grip and pleasing weight in hand. The unglazed foot reveals the rich reddish-brown clay body and bears the kiln mark, reinforcing the authentic, handcrafted character of Karatsu ware.
Embodying wabi-sabi aesthetics, this yunomi embraces natural texture, subtle asymmetry, and understated beauty. Ideal for sencha, bancha, or hojicha, it invites mindful enjoyment with every use.
