Vintage item, never used. A distinctive Japanese chawan presented as an Daifuku chawan (大福茶盌), decorated with an elegant gakki-zukushi 楽器尽, assortment of traditional musical instruments motif.
The bowl has a generous rounded form with a beautifully vivid turquoise-green exterior and a clean white interior. Around the body, traditional Japanese musical instruments are rendered in fine cobalt-blue linework, connected by long, flowing cords that create a graceful sense of movement around the bowl.
Gakki-zukushi (楽器尽) is a decorative composition featuring various musical instruments together. Such motifs evoke the refined world of classical music, courtly culture and celebration, making them particularly appropriate for festive tea utensils.
The original box identifies the piece as 大福茶盌, it is an auspicious tea tradition especially associated with Kyoto and the Japanese New Year, when tea is enjoyed as a prayer for health, happiness and protection from misfortune during the coming year. The name literally carries the auspicious sense of “great fortune.”
The set retains its original presentation box as well as a card from 「京の茶道具 やました」 (Kyō no Chadōgu Yamashita), a Kyoto tea-utensil retailer, further emphasizing its connection with Kyoto tea culture.
