A vintage Japanese Kensui (建水), a traditional waste water bowl used in the Japanese tea ceremony (Chadō). Crafted from metal in the style of Karakane (唐銅), a traditional copper-alloy material associated with Japanese tea utensils, this piece features a beautifully understated dark bronze-toned finish.

The bowl has a simple, rounded form with a wide opening, gently curved sides, and a subtly raised rim. Its smooth surface and muted metallic tones reflect the restrained elegance of Japanese tea ceremony aesthetics, where functionality, simplicity, and craftsmanship are deeply appreciated.

In the Japanese tea ceremony, a Kensui serves as a receptacle for discarded water during the preparation of matcha. It is an essential utensil used by the tea practitioner to maintain cleanliness and order throughout the ceremony. Traditionally made from materials such as copper alloys, ceramics, or lacquerware, Kensui bowls come in various forms depending on the tea tradition and seasonal setting.

Beyond its traditional function, this vintage bowl can also be appreciated as a decorative Japanese metalwork object, bringing a quiet sense of wabi-sabi to a tea room or interior.
