TC55 - Seto-yaki Chawan Matcha Bowl 瀬戸焼

TC55 - Seto-yaki Chawan Matcha Bowl 瀬戸焼

This Seto-yaki (瀬戸焼) matcha bowl presents a warm, quietly expressive character that reflects the long-established ceramic traditions of Seto. Seto is one of Japan’s legendary Rokkoyō (Six Ancient Kilns). The region became famous for its mastery of high-fired, glazed stoneware and its innovative use of ash glazes.

The glaze is a soft, honeyed beige layered with subtle horizontal throwing lines that remain visible beneath the surface, giving the bowl a sense of movement and rhythm. These concentric traces speak directly to the potter’s wheel work and add a tactile quality that rewards close viewing. A small, natural accent of green glaze appears on the exterior, likely the result of ash or mineral interaction during firing, introducing an element of spontaneity and visual focus.

The interior is smoothly finished, with a calm, glossy surface that enhances the color of whisked tea. At the base, the foot ring is neatly defined and partially unglazed, revealing the pale clay body beneath. The contrast between the exposed clay and the flowing glaze emphasizes the bowl’s structure and grounding.

Overall, this chawan embodies the understated elegance typical of Seto ware—functional, honest, and quietly refined. It is a bowl meant for daily use as well as contemplation, offering a gentle balance between craftsmanship and natural kiln expression.
