TC63 - Hagi-yaki Chawan Matcha Bowl 萩焼
This Hagi-yaki (萩焼) chawan from Senryūzan (泉流山), Ōmayugama (大眉窯) embodies the quiet elegance and tactile warmth that define Hagi ware. The bowl is formed with a gently flaring silhouette and a softly rounded body, offering a natural, comfortable presence in the hands. Its surface is covered in a pale, misty blue glaze with subtle variations in tone, pooling lightly in places and revealing the clay beneath along the foot, where the warm, reddish-brown body is left exposed.
The glaze displays fine kannyū (貫入) crackle, a hallmark of Hagi-yaki, which will gradually deepen and evolve with use as tea is absorbed, allowing the bowl to develop character over time—an effect cherished as Hagi no nanabake, the “seven transformations of Hagi.” Inside, the glaze settles smoothly with gentle ripples from the wheel, enhancing the visual depth when filled with matcha.
Crafted at Ōmayugama, this chawan reflects the kiln’s respect for traditional Hagi aesthetics: understated beauty, natural irregularity, and an emphasis on texture and touch rather than ornamentation. It is a contemplative tea bowl that rewards repeated use, aligning closely with the wabi-sabi spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony.
