This Oribe-yaki (織部焼) chawan is a striking example of the bold and expressive aesthetics that define Mino ware from the Momoyama tradition. The bowl features a warm, buff-toned clay body, its softly rounded form gently tapering toward a modest foot, creating a stable yet organic silhouette well suited for the tea ceremony.

Across the surface runs a lively hand-painted design in rich iron-brown, depicting stylized grasses motifs that encircle the body. The brushwork is confident and spontaneous, a hallmark of Oribe ware’s dynamic character. In contrast, a dramatic sweep of deep green Oribe glaze flows over one side of the rim and upper body, pooling and thickening as it descends. This asymmetrical application of green copper glaze—vivid yet earthy—creates visual tension and balance, one of the defining features of Oribe ceramics.

The rim is slightly undulating, adding to the handmade quality and tactile appeal. Oribe-yaki is celebrated for its departure from strict symmetry and its embrace of playful irregularity. This chawan embodies that spirit—rustic yet sophisticated, expressive yet grounded—making it both a functional tea bowl and a sculptural object that captures the wabi-sabi sensibility at the heart of Japanese tea culture.
