TC88 - Chawan Matcha Bowl of Oribe-yaki 織部焼
This Oribe-yaki (織部焼) chawan by Kikkō-yaki / Kikkō kiln (吉向焼) is a charming example of the expressive and playful aesthetics associated with Oribe ware, combined with the refined sensibility of Osaka-based ceramic tradition.
The bowl features a gently flared form with a light, well-balanced body suited for preparing and enjoying matcha. Its surface is divided into contrasting decorative zones, a hallmark of Oribe style. One side is coated in a rich, translucent copper-green glaze, pooling deeply along the rim and flowing organically down the body, creating natural variations in tone from deep emerald to softer moss hues. This vibrant green contrasts beautifully with the opposing area of creamy white glaze, subtly crackled and warm in tone.
Across the white ground, delicate sakura (cherry blossom) motifs are painted in iron brushwork, their simple yet expressive outlines accompanied by horizontal strokes suggesting drifting petals or spring breezes. The asymmetrical composition, with its balance of bold glaze and minimal brush design, reflects the Oribe aesthetic of spontaneity and visual tension.
The foot is neatly trimmed, revealing the natural clay body beneath the glaze, while the overall form retains a slight irregularity that enhances its handcrafted character. The interior continues the dialogue between glazes, with the green pooling near the rim and the lighter glaze opening toward the center, providing an ideal backdrop for the vivid green of matcha.
