VTT130 - Tsuko-Tegata Pass from Tōson Memorial Museum 藤村記念館
This Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) is a charming wooden travel pass charm. The front is illustrated with the façade of a classic post town building bearing the name 馬籠宿 (Magome-juku) — one of the best-preserved stations along the Nakasendō route that once connected Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto. The white plaster walls, latticework, and stone foundation beautifully capture the atmosphere of this mountain post town, famous for its cobbled slopes and Edo-period ambiance.
This piece comes from the Tōson Memorial Museum (藤村記念館) in Magome. The museum is dedicated to Shimazaki Tōson (島崎藤村), the celebrated Meiji-era writer born in Magome, known for works such as Before the Dawn (夜明け前), which vividly depicts the region and the changing times along the Nakasendō. As such, this Tsuko-Tegata connects not only to travel history but also to Japan’s literary heritage.
The bold calligraphy reading 通行成就 (Tsūkō Jōju), meaning “successful passage” or “safe completion of travel.” A red seal stamp reinforces its commemorative and auspicious character.
Finished with a red-and-white braided cord and a small ceramic bell, whose gentle sound is traditionally believed to ward off misfortune, this Tsuko-Tegata serves as both a nostalgic travel souvenir and a protective charm — a beautiful reminder of Magome’s historic road and literary legacy.
