This large Tsuko-Tegata (通行手形) comes from San’in Kaigan National Park (山陰海岸国立公園), the scenic coastal park stretching along the Sea of Japan across Tottori, Hyōgo, and Kyoto prefectures. Traditionally styled as a wooden travel pass, this piece serves as both a souvenir and a symbolic charm for safe and successful journeys.

The front features bold calligraphy reading 通行手形, flanked by references to Tottori (鳥取) and sightseeing memories, with an official red seal stamp adding an authentic commemorative touch. The strong brush lettering evokes the historic travel permits of Japan’s Edo period, when such passes were required to journey between domains.

The reverse side displays a charming illustrated map titled 旅の想い出 (Memories of the Journey). Highlighted are notable regional landmarks such as the Tottori Sand Dunes (鳥取砂丘), hot springs, and areas within Daisen-Oki National Park and surrounding scenic spots. At the bottom, camels walk across the dunes beside green mountain landscapes—an iconic image of the San’in coastline’s dramatic natural beauty.

Finished with a red-and-white braided cord and a small bell, whose gentle sound traditionally wards off misfortune, this Tsuko-Tegata embodies the spirit of travel, protection, and remembrance. It is a nostalgic keepsake celebrating the rugged coastline, sand dunes, and rich natural heritage of San’in Kaigan National Park.
