Collection: Kijiyama

Kijiyama Kokeshi are a traditional style of kokeshi dolls from the Kijiyama region in Akita Prefecture, Japan. Originating in the 19th century, they are easily recognized by their slightly conical bodies, rounded heads, and distinctive painted patterns—often featuring chrysanthemum or plum blossom motifs in red, green, and purple. These dolls were originally made by woodworkers (kijiya), which is how they got their name, and sold as souvenirs at local hot springs. Today, Kijiyama Kokeshi remain a celebrated part of Japan’s folk art heritage.
