Zao

Zao Kokeshi are a traditional style of kokeshi dolls from the Zao Onsen area in Yamagata Prefecture, Japan. They are known for their slender, slightly tapered bodies, rounded heads, and delicate hand-painted floral designs, often featuring chrysanthemum or plum blossom patterns in red and green. A unique feature of Zao Kokeshi is their simple, gentle facial expressions and the elegant balance between the head and body shape, giving them a refined look. Like other kokeshi, they began as souvenirs for hot spring visitors and are now cherished as part of Japan’s folk art heritage.
