Shingata Kokeshi, also called “Creative” or “Modern” Kokeshi,” are a newer style of kokeshi dolls that emerged in the mid-20th century in Japan. Unlike traditional kokeshi, which follow strict regional shapes and painting styles, Shingata Kokeshi allow artisans complete creative freedom in design, color, and form. They often feature modern patterns, abstract shapes, and unique facial expressions, turning kokeshi from simple souvenirs into artistic, one-of-a-kind collectibles. This style helped bring kokeshi into the realm of contemporary Japanese folk art.
