CB215 - Lucky Mallet Wooden Dorei Bell 福のこづち
This Fuku no Kozuchi 福のこづち dorei bell is a small Japanese folk craft inspired by the legendary “Lucky Mallet,” a symbol of fortune, prosperity, and the granting of wishes in Japanese folklore. Traditionally associated with the magical mallet carried by Daikokuten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods, the kozuchi is believed to produce treasures when shaken, representing abundance and good luck.
At the front are small perforations that allow the soft ringing sound to escape when the bell is shaken. Inside the hollow body sits a small metal pellet that creates a gentle, pleasant chime, similar to the sound of traditional dorei clay bells often found at shrines or sold as protective charms.
Attached to the handle is a red and white braided cord, a color combination frequently used in Japanese talismans to symbolize protection and auspiciousness. The natural wood grain and simple craftsmanship give the piece a warm, rustic character typical of traditional Japanese folk toys and charms.
As a symbolic object, the Fuku no Kozuchi represents the hope that fortune and blessings will multiply, much like the magical mallet that could produce riches with a single shake. Because of this meaning, small bells like this were often kept as lucky charms, hung in the home, or given as souvenirs believed to bring prosperity and good fortune to their owner.
