CB223 - Izu Dorei Clay Bell of Sheep 伊豆
This Sheep Clay Bell comes from the scenic Izu Peninsula 伊豆, a region well known for its traditional folk crafts and handmade souvenirs inspired by Japanese seasonal traditions and the zodiac.
The bell is shaped as a stylized sheep (未 / hitsuji), the eighth animal of the Japanese zodiac. The figure is rendered in a simple, rounded folk-art style with a softly textured body and a gentle expression. Its curled golden horn, delicate painted facial features, and white wool-like upper coat create a warm and endearing appearance. A purple cord attached at the top allows the bell to be hung as a decorative charm.
The sheep zodiac sign is often associated with peace, harmony, and family unity. Sheep are also considered symbols of calmness and kindness, making them a popular motif for auspicious ornaments displayed during the New Year to welcome a fortunate and harmonious year ahead.
As a traditional dorei (土鈴), the figure is hollow with a small pellet inside that produces a soft, pleasant chime when gently shaken. Historically, the sound of clay bells in Japan has been believed to purify spaces, ward off misfortune, and attract good fortune.
