This snake dorei clay bell from Kaijin Shrine (海神社) is a charming example of Japanese auspicious folk craft, blending symbolic meaning with soft, handcrafted beauty. The serpent is rendered in a gentle, rounded form and finished in pure white, accented with delicate gold highlights and a colorful floral motif inspired by traditional Japanese textile patterns. Its calm expression and curled body give the piece a graceful and protective presence.

Made by Yakushigama (薬師窯), this bell embodies the warmth and refinement of traditional Japanese ceramic folk art. With a kiln heritage spanning over a thousand years, Yakushigama is renowned for producing seasonal zodiac figures, shrine charms, and symbolic ornaments that combine traditional craftsmanship with approachable handmade charm. Their works are cherished for their soft forms, auspicious meanings, and nostalgic character.

Located in Hyōgo Prefecture near the Akashi Strait, Kaijin Shrine has long been associated with maritime protection, safe journeys, and spiritual purification. The shrine’s name, literally meaning “Sea Deity Shrine,” reflects its deep connection to the sea and ancient local beliefs. Talismans and folk bells from the shrine are treasured as symbols of divine protection and good fortune.

In Japanese tradition, the snake is considered a sacred and auspicious creature linked to renewal, wisdom, fertility, and prosperity. White snakes in particular are regarded as messengers of Benzaiten, the deity of fortune and abundance. As a dorei bell, this piece also carries the traditional belief that its gentle sound wards away negativity while inviting harmony and blessings into the home.
