CB281 - Dorei Clay Bell of Nogomi Ningyō のごみ人形
This vintage crafted clay bell (dorei) features a Nogomi Ningyō (のごみ人形) in the shape of a goat, a traditional folk craft from Saga Prefecture in Kyūshū, Japan. Historically, during difficult times such as the late war period and postwar hardship, these dolls were created as a source of comfort and hope for people’s daily lives.
Over time, they developed into local folk toys sold at places such as shrines (including Inari shrines), appreciated for their simple and warm expressions. They are also associated with wishes for protection from misfortune, good luck, and prosperity.
Handmade and hand-painted with vivid colors, the dragon is adorned in white with bold yellow, red, blue, and black accents — symbolizing strength, energy, and auspicious fortune. The rounded shape, stylized features, and simple brushwork give it the signature playful and rustic feel typical of Nogomi folk figures.
As a zodiac-inspired figurine, this goat also symbolizes gentleness, peace, and harmony—traits traditionally associated with the Year of the Goat in the Chinese zodiac. The inclusion of a bell inside further enhances its role as an amulet, as the soft ringing sound is said to attract good fortune and spiritual protection.
