A charming vintage dorei (土鈴) clay bell from Kamakura (鎌倉), formed in the shape of a traditional Japanese lock (錠前).

The surface is finished in a soft white tone and decorated with narcissus flowers (水仙 / suisen) in yellow, orange, and grey-black brushwork. The loose, expressive painting gives the piece a warm folk-art character,.

In Japan, dorei are small earthenware bells traditionally associated with folk beliefs, temples, shrines, seasonal customs, and regional souvenirs. Their gentle sound has long been connected with ideas of protection and good fortune. The lock form is particularly symbolic, suggesting the safeguarding of something precious, while narcissus flowers are admired in Japan for their elegant winter blossoms and their association with the arrival of the new season.

A lovely example of Japanese regional folk craft, combining the distinctive culture of Kamakura with playful symbolism decoration.

Size: 7 x 3 x 6cm
