CB339 - Kyō Ningyō Dorei Clay Bell Dragon 京人形
A beautiful vintage Japanese dorei (土鈴) clay bell featuring a traditional dragon motif, created in the style of Kyō Ningyō (京人形), the celebrated doll-making craftsmanship of Kyoto.
This charming bell features a rounded form decorated in soft turquoise green and shimmering gold, with a white dragon and a red dragon painted on opposite sides. Elegant swirling patterns evoke clouds and flowing energy, while the reverse bears the character 辰 (tatsu), representing the Dragon in the Japanese zodiac. A bright red braided cord with a decorative tassel completes its traditional appearance.
Kyō Ningyō (京人形) refers to traditional dolls and decorative figures associated with Kyoto, a city renowned for its centuries-old artistic heritage. The craft flourished during the Edo period (1603–1868), drawing upon the refined aesthetics of Kyoto's imperial court and skilled artisan communities. From elaborate Hina Ningyō to elegant Gosho Ningyō, Kyoto's doll-making traditions are admired for their expressive forms, delicate decoration, and meticulous craftsmanship.
In Japanese culture, the dragon (tatsu or ryū, 龍) is a powerful symbol of strength, wisdom, prosperity, and good fortune. As one of the twelve animals of the Japanese zodiac (eto, 干支), the dragon is particularly associated with ambition, vitality, and success.
