FT303 - Japan Folk Craft of Kagami Mochi 鏡餅
This charming Japanese folk craft ornament is a fabric rendition of Kagami Mochi (鏡餅)—a traditional New Year’s decoration symbolizing prosperity, longevity, and family harmony.
Expertly handmade using chirimen-style crepe fabric, the piece features two layered white mochi rice cakes, topped with a daidai (bitter orange) and a string of small red and yellow fruits, symbolizing generational continuity and good fortune. A festive mizuhiki cord and red-and-gold decorative knot are tied in the front, adding a celebratory touch. The base is adorned with symbolic green fern leaves (shide) and layered paper squares in red and white, representing purification and auspiciousness.
Often placed on family altars or in the household during the New Year (正月, Shōgatsu), this textile okazari kagami mochi is a modern, reusable alternative to traditional rice cakes. It makes a beautiful seasonal display or a thoughtful gift to welcome in the new year with blessings and gratitude.
