FT311 - Japanese folk craft toy Kendama けん玉
This is a vintage Japanese folk craft toy – Kendama (けん玉), a traditional wooden skill toy that has entertained generations across Japan. This particular kendama is crafted entirely from natural wood, finished with a smooth lacquered surface, and carries a wonderfully aged patina that adds character and authenticity.
The design consists of the classic three-part structure: the ken (sword), which features two cups and a spike, and the tama (ball), connected by a string. The tama in this piece is solid wood, polished and slightly glossy. Uniquely, the base and underside of the cups are marked with handwritten characters and a year – “1986” – as well as a name written in hiragana: “かとうひでこ” (Katō Hideko), the name of the original owner.
Kendama is more than a toy; it’s a beloved part of Japanese culture, fostering patience, balance, and hand-eye coordination. Its enduring appeal has made it a popular item not only among children but also among collectors and enthusiasts of traditional Japanese crafts.
This piece is perfect as a nostalgic decorative item, a thoughtful gift, or an addition to any collection of vintage Japanese folk toys.
