This Negai-uma, “Wishing Horse” (願い馬) is a handcrafted Japanese folk toy created by Hikō Sōsaku 肥工創作, a maker known for producing traditional rural crafts inspired by shrine offerings and auspicious symbolism.

Carved in a simple, rounded form and mounted on four wooden wheels, the horse evokes the nostalgic style of old Japanese pull toys. Its vivid vermilion body is boldly decorated with hand-painted black and white motifs, stylized eyes, and bright yellow accents, giving it a lively and protective expression. Around its neck hangs a silver bell, while braided red-and-white cords and a small woven textile saddle add festive detail and movement. The wheels are cut from natural wood, their grain visible, reinforcing the piece’s warm handmade character.

In Japanese tradition, horses have long been regarded as sacred animals associated with Shinto shrines, where they were once offered as sacred steeds (神馬). Over time, horse motifs became symbols of protection, safe journeys, marital harmony, and the fulfillment of wishes. As indicated in the accompanying leaflet, this wishing horse carries prayers for good fortune, success, and harmonious relationships.

Both playful and symbolic, this Negai-uma embodies the spirit of Japanese mingei (folk craft): humble materials, bold color, and heartfelt meaning—created not only as a decorative object, but as a bearer of hopes and blessings.
