FT380 - Imari ware tiger figurine 伊万里焼

This seiji (celadon) tiger figurine in the style of Imari ware 伊万里焼 combines lively form with refined ceramic elegance and is signed by the maker Minoru 実. Covered in a luminous jade-green celadon glaze, the piece displays the soft translucence and subtle tonal variation characteristic of seiji ceramics. The glossy surface accentuates the sculpted contours of the tiger’s body, while delicate crackle patterns beneath the glaze add depth and visual richness.

Imari ware is one of Japan’s most famous porcelain traditions, originating in the town of Arita in Saga Prefecture during the early 17th century. Known for its refined craftsmanship and vibrant decorative styles.

The tiger is modeled in a dynamic stance with its back arched and tail raised high, suggesting alertness and energetic movement. Stylized swirling motifs across the body replace natural stripes, giving the figure a decorative, almost cloud-like rhythm that blends traditional symbolism with artistic abstraction.

In East Asian symbolism, the tiger represents courage, protection, and commanding strength. As the zodiac animal of the Year of the Tiger (寅), it is believed to ward off evil and inspire bold action and leadership.
