FT381 - Seiji Boar Figurine by Gyokuzen 玉善

FT381 - Seiji Boar Figurine by Gyokuzen 玉善

This seiji celadon-glazed boar figurine is a refined piece of Arita ware (有田焼) crafted by the ceramic artist Gyokuzen 玉善. The sculpture is finished in a luminous seiji (celadon) glaze, whose soft jade-blue tone and glossy surface emphasize the smooth contours of the animal. Subtle variations in the glaze create gentle depth across the body, enhancing the elegant simplicity of the form.

The boar is depicted in a compact yet powerful stance with its head lowered slightly forward, suggesting determination and forward momentum. Its rounded body, short legs, and tightly curled tail are stylized in a clean and modern interpretation while still retaining the charm of traditional Japanese zodiac figures. The minimal detailing allows the beauty of the porcelain and glaze to take center stage.

Arita ware, produced in Saga Prefecture since the early 17th century, is Japan’s oldest porcelain tradition and is celebrated for its fine white porcelain body and refined glazing techniques. The work of Gyokuzen reflects this heritage, combining classical craftsmanship with a modern sculptural sensibility.

As the zodiac animal 亥 (boar), the figure symbolizes courage, honesty, and steadfast determination. In Japanese tradition the boar represents the spirit of advancing boldly toward one’s goals, making this elegant Arita porcelain piece both a meaningful zodiac ornament and a graceful example of contemporary Japanese ceramic artistry.
