This vintage folk craft talisman is a handcrafted kibori no mayoke 木彫りの魔除け from the Izu (伊豆) — a region long celebrated for its rugged coastlines, volcanic landscapes, hot springs, and rich folk traditions. Rustic, expressive, and full of raw spiritual energy, the piece reflects the powerful symbolism often found in regional Japanese mingei and protective folk crafts.

Carved from a natural tree branch with the bark intentionally preserved, the figure features a vividly painted guardian face in bright blues, reds, yellows, and pinks. Its exaggerated eyes, fierce expression, and wild straw-like hair give it an almost shamanic presence, a protective oni and guardian spirits found throughout Japanese folk belief.

In Japan, mayoke charms have traditionally been used to ward off evil spirits, misfortune, illness, and harmful influences. Folk talismans such as this were commonly displayed near entrances, carried during journeys, or hung inside homes as symbolic protectors. The rough natural branch and primitive hand-shaped form emphasize its connection to nature and ancient spiritual practices.

The Izu Peninsula, with its isolated fishing villages and mountain communities, preserved many unique folk customs and handmade crafts connected to protection, luck, and local spirituality. This piece beautifully embodies that rustic regional character through its organic materials, expressive carving, and vibrant hand-painted details.

While the irregular handmade texture gives the object a wonderfully authentic and one-of-a-kind personality. Rather than refined perfection, this type of folk art celebrates symbolic power, individuality, and the warmth of handmade craftsmanship.
