FT48 - Folk toy ceramic Kyoto 土人形の福犬

This is the oldest style of dog figurine in Japan’s folk toy. It’s called 土人形の福犬. Fortune dog is traditional handicrafts made from ceramics or clay, designed in the shape of dogs. These figurines are regarded as symbols of good fortune and protection, often used to safeguard homes, bring peace, and invite prosperity.

It comes from the category of Fushimi Figurines (Kyoto, Fushimi Inari Shrine) which are Japan’s oldest clay dolls, originating in the Fushimi area of Kyoto. Fortune dogs are a classic motif in this tradition. They’re rounded, adorable shapes with slightly exaggerated proportions, giving them a warm and friendly appearance. Often depicted in seated or standing poses, with simple, innocent expressions symbolizing loyalty and stability.

They were given as gifts during important life events such as weddings, childbirth, or moving into a new home, symbolizing blessings and well-wishes.
