This delightful Kimekomi Ningyō (木目込み人形) depicts the Rat (Nezumi, 子), the first animal of the Japanese Zodiac. Handcrafted in Kyoto using the traditional kimekomi technique, the doll combines elegant textile artistry with centuries of Japanese craftsmanship.

Kimekomi dolls originated in Kyoto during the Edo period (18th century). The technique involves carving shallow grooves into a wooden form and carefully tucking richly patterned fabrics into them, creating smooth, seamless designs without visible stitching. Originally developed by artisans associated with Kyoto's Kamigamo Shrine, Kimekomi Ningyō has since become one of Japan's most celebrated traditional doll-making arts.

The mouse has long been regarded as an auspicious creature in Japanese folklore, often associated with wealth due to its connection with Daikokuten, one of the Seven Lucky Gods. This mouse features a rounded body covered in a harmonious patchwork of classic Japanese textiles, including delicate chirimen fabrics in red, black, white, and grey patterns. Its gentle embroidered expression, tiny whiskers, and bright yellow decorative cord create an elegant balance between playful charm and refined craftsmanship.
