This Japanese zodiac ornament depicts the Rat (子 / Nezumi), the first animal of the twelve-year zodiac cycle. Created by Tamayoshi (玉善) for Yakushigama (薬師窯), the set features a large white rat accompanied by a smaller bright-red companion, both modelled with softly rounded forms and gentle expressions.

The white figure is decorated with an intricate floral and flowing-water motif in rich blue, red, green and gold tones, while the smaller rat is finished in vivid red with delicate white accents. Red and white are traditionally considered an auspicious colour combination in Japan, associated with celebration, happiness and good fortune.

The figures are displayed on a raised black base with a purple mat, accompanied by a folding gold-coloured screen bearing the red character 寿, meaning longevity. A small wooden maker’s plaque completes the presentation.

Yakushigama is one of Japan’s best-loved ceramic workshops, particularly admired for its auspicious zodiac ornaments and folk-inspired decorative pieces. Produced in Seto, Aichi Prefecture, one of Japan’s most historic pottery centres, the work reflects a ceramic tradition extending back more than a thousand years.

In Japanese symbolism, the rat is associated with intelligence, adaptability, fertility and prosperity. As the first animal of the zodiac, it also represents new beginnings and the start of a fresh cycle. This cheerful set makes a meaningful New Year decoration, a thoughtful gift for someone born in the Year of the Rat, or a distinctive addition to a collection of Japanese folk ceramics.
