K10174 - Omiyage Kokeshi doll from Beppu 別府
This is a omiyage (souvenir) kokeshi doll from Beppu (別府), one of Japan’s most renowned hot spring resorts located in Ōita Prefecture, Kyūshū.
Carved from natural wood, this handcrafted figure depicts a serene bath attendant kneeling in traditional style, holding a shallow bowl as if offering hot spring water. Her elegant, elongated form is highlighted by minimalist yet expressive painted features and delicate white cord details that resemble the ties of her bathing attire. Her neatly tied topknot and relaxed posture evoke the calm atmosphere of onsen culture.
The wooden base is signed 別府, confirming its origin from the Beppu onsen area, famous for its high concentration of hot springs and unique geothermal landscapes, including “hells” (jigoku) and sand baths. This kokeshi captures both the warmth and hospitality of Beppu, making it a lovely reminder of Japan’s deep-rooted bathing traditions.
