K15134 - Bamboo Echizen Take Ningyō 越前竹人形
This Bamboo Echizen Take Ningyō 越前竹人形 is a finely crafted bamboo folk doll originating from the region around Eiheiji 永平寺 in Fukui Prefecture. Echizen bamboo dolls are well known for their simple yet elegant construction, using natural bamboo pieces combined with delicate carving and assembly to create expressive human figures.
The figure depicts a wandering monk or pilgrim, recognizable by the large woven sedge hat (sugegasa) that shades the face, a common image associated with traveling Buddhist monks and temple pilgrims. The body is formed from sections of natural bamboo, carefully cut and shaped to represent the torso and limbs. Subtle variations in the bamboo grain and natural markings give each piece a unique character. The monk’s robe and arms are constructed from thin bamboo panels, while the chest panel bears a small inscription, adding to the authenticity of the piece.
Bamboo crafts like this are closely connected to the cultural atmosphere surrounding Eiheiji Temple, one of the two main temples of the Sōtō Zen school of Buddhism, founded in the 13th century by Dōgen Zenji. Craftsmen in the region developed bamboo figurines as souvenirs and artistic expressions reflecting the quiet spiritual life of the temple area.
