K15163 - Omiyage Kokeshi of Dokuganryū 独眼竜
This vintage omiyage kokeshi depicts Dokuganryū Date Masamune (独眼竜 伊達政宗), the famous one-eyed warlord of the Sengoku period and founder of the Sendai domain. The piece was made by Kawamura (カワムラ / 河村), a maker associated with decorative souvenir-style kokeshi.
The kokeshi has a bold and expressive head design, with sharply painted eyes, strong eyebrows, a small red mouth, and a blue head covering. A small black crest-like detail on the top evokes the silhouette of a samurai helmet. The body is decorated with a finely painted scene of Date Masamune on horseback, wearing armour and his iconic crescent-moon helmet. The writing beside the image reads 独眼竜伊達政宗, referring to Masamune’s famous nickname, “the One-Eyed Dragon.”
This piece combines the simple wooden form of an omiyage kokeshi with the dramatic imagery of a historical samurai hero. The painted scene gives it a strong regional and narrative character, likely connected to the Sendai / Miyagi area, where Date Masamune remains an important cultural symbol.
A distinctive vintage souvenir kokeshi for collectors of Japanese folk craft, samurai-themed items, historical figures, and regional omiyage dolls.
