K18055 - Yamagata by Yasutaro Suzuki 鈴木安太郎

Almost 100 years old Yamagata kokeshi doll from 1930s crafted by Yasutaro Suzuki (鈴木安太郎, 1895–1976). The doll showcases the refined simplicity characteristic of the Yamagata tradition, with a cylindrical body and minimalistic form that emphasizes its decorative motifs. The face is delicately painted with thin, high-set eyebrows, narrow almond-shaped eyes, and a serene expression. On the head, faintly colored floral accents enhance the doll's gentle charm. The body features an arrangement of stylized red plum blossoms (ume) with yellow centers, set against the natural grain of the wood, bordered above and below by finely drawn red rings.

Yasutaro Suzuki was born in Yamagata Prefecture and was initially a turner of wooden items for daily use. In the 1920s, he began crafting kokeshi inspired by the Yamagata lineage, particularly influenced by the techniques of Sakunami and Naruko styles as well. He is known for his clean linework, warm expressions, and the use of plum or cherry blossoms as a recurring motif in his work. This piece is a beautiful representation of Yasutaro’s artistry modest, heartfelt, and imbued with regional charm. Its balance of simplicity and floral elegance makes it a treasured example of traditional kokeshi craftsmanship from the Yamagata region. Size: 5 x 5 x 18cm
